Video Friday

Clearing out several long-held animation links this morning for you. All of these shorts are quite charming.

First is Superman’s Best Friend by Brett Underhill, which is hilarious (and the animation is a design treat). May not be everyone’s cup of tea, as it involves walking a dog, if you know what I mean, but I think it’s adorable. Via.

I could really relate to the neatnik Bear in Helen Dallat‘s short Bare. The whole piece really appeals to me, from its quiet nature to its design. Bare was Dallat’s graduation film for the University of Wales at Newport. Via.

Next is The Renter by Jason Carpenter, which is a lovely and haunting student film. The short has won or been nominated for 18 awards, including the Ottawa International Animation Festival 2011, the Atlanta Film Festival 2011, and the 38th annual Annie Awards. Check out the official description:

A young boy is dropped off at an elderly woman’s home for the day. A lone man, who rents a room, adds to the unsettling atmosphere. The savage slaughter of a chicken makes this daycare a harsh and confusing world for the boy, who learns caring can be shown in unexpected ways.

Via.

The last piece is something pretty fantastic: cyborg ballerinas! (Yes, I’m terribly excited about it!) Fighting Spirits, by Gene Kim, is described thus: “In the distant future, two rival ballerinas face off at a final audition that takes a turn for the unexpected.” Enjoy! Via.
